The Host Community

Our farming, gardening and teaching activities are conducted on properties owned by New Vrindaban Community, one of America’s oldest existing intentional communities. New Vrindaban traces its history back to 1969 when a handful of Hare Krishna devotees began homesteading a 130-acre run down farm near Moundsville, West Virginia. The community was founded on the principles of selfless service to God and plain living. Gardening, cow protection, a strict lacto-vegetarian diet, ox powered farming and hosting festivals were all key components to early New Vrindaban life. That early “back-to-the-land” era was transformed in 1979 with the completion of the world renown Palace of Gold. Almost overnight, New Vrindaban’s population zoomed to 700 plus residents, quickly becoming an overnight pilgrimage and tourist destination for hundreds and thousands of visitors. Nearly forty years later, New Vrindaban continues to draw numerous guests and now encompasses approximately 1500 acres of rolling woodlands and pastures.
